When it comes to designing and decorating a home, there are a multitude of factors that add up to the overall ambiance of the space. One of the biggest factors that can impact how a person feels when they are in that space is the color of the paint. There is a large amount of personal preference when it comes to choosing paint colors, but there are some overarching characteristics that can affect how a person feels.

The color itself does not necessarily make an impact, but the “temperature” of the color does. Warm color tones, like reds, yellows, and oranges, have a tendency to bring energy and excitement to a space. Conversely, cooler tones like blues, greens, and whites, tend to provide a more relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. An application of this idea is to paint a room like a home gym or an office a warmer color to help drive energy and productivity. In a room like a bedroom or a bathroom where you are looking to relax and recover you may want to pick a cooler tone.

One thing to keep in mind when selecting paint colors is the type of lighting that you have in the room. Paint stores commonly have different styles of light sources so that you can test your color swatch in the lighting style that you have because it can have a big impact on how the color looks when it is actually up on the wall. White, bright lighting will brighten up whatever color it is hitting and can lead to a room seeming more open and roomy. Incandescent lighting may make your color of choice appear darker than it really is.
